A wedding day is one of the important rites of passage for any couple. Because it is such a significant event there is a lot of planning involved to make sure the day is memorable for the bride and groom as well as anyone who is lucky enough to be a part of the ceremony, whether participating in the wedding or just observing. Before you can get to the magical part of saying “I do” in Memphis, you’ll need to do something together as a couple. The two of you will have to get a Memphis, TN marriage license.

Getting your Memphis, TN marriage license isn’t very hard but there are some rules you have to follow when going to get it. First, your age plays a part in what type of identification you need to be able to apply for the license. A social security card is always required from both parties no matter the age, but the second form of ID will vary. If both the bride and groom are over 21 they each need to have a picture ID. If either of the parties is between 18 and 21 then you need to bring a birth certificate with you instead of the picture ID. For these ages, the marriage license is instant after paying for it and you won’t have wait at all.

If either you or your partner is under 18 but over 16, you’ll need to have your parents come with you bringing your birth certificate. Your parents will need to sign a document stating they accept the union and there will be a 3 day waiting period to get the license. Anyone under 16 will need to have a waiver signed by the juvenile court. This is usually given for emancipated minors.

The cost of your Memphis, TN marriage license falls just short of $100. You can actually have the cost reduced if you have taken premarital counseling with a licensed instructor. If you want the reduced cost you just need to fill out a form, which can be found at the county clerk’s office. After you fill it out you also need to have the licensed instructor sign it as well. When you turn it in your marriage license will go from $97.50 to $37.50.

There is a time limit on how long you can wait to use your Memphis, TN marriage license before it expires so be sure to get it closer to the date of the wedding. Since you have 30 days to use it the ideal time to apply for it would be within two weeks of the wedding so that there is some leeway in case plans need to change. If you end up not using the license in time you can still apply for a new one at the same cost.

After the wedding you’ll need to have the person who performed your ceremony sign the vital record application. That will then need to be mailed to the county clerk’s office as soon as possible because that validates that you are now an official married couple.
